The grand sight of a 16th century style French Chateau surrounded by lush vineyards coming into view from I-85 may conjure up images of the Loire Valley of France. Opened in 1985, the full-production Winery inside the Chateau is the largest producer of premium wines in Georgia, and recognized by Wine Spectator for exceptional vintages. The Winery has two restaurants, Café Élan, a bistro and Le Clos for fine dining plus an Art Gallery, Wine Market for shopping and Winery Tours & Tastings.
The 42,000 sq. ft. Winery is also a superb venue for corporate and social functions and is the centerpiece of Chateau Elan Winery & Resort, a 3,500 acre Four Diamond, Four Star, resort and conference destination.
Winemaking
At Château Élan winemaking is art and science, tradition and modern technology. Our winemakers have come from generations of French, German and American wine families, blending the best of the old ways with the best of the new. The grapes are picked by hand to ensure only the finest fruit is chosen.
White grapes are pressed as a whole cluster. The juice is then fermented in temperature-controlled stainless steel tanks.
Red grapes are de-stemmed and crushed. The skins, pulp and juice are then fermented in stainless steel tanks. Pressing of the red wine occurs after fermentation. Wines are aged in a variety of French and American oak barrels.
Vineyards
Approximately 75 acres are currently planted in Vinifera French and French-American hybrid grapes. Among 22 varietals produced are Merlot, Cabernet Sauvignon, Chambourcin, Sangiovese, Pinot Noir, Sauvignon Blanc, Chardonnay, Riesling, Viognier and several popular Muscadine wines. Château Élan has developed ingenious methods of trellising, pruning and fertilization that generate excellent quality and productivity. Due to the humid climate in Georgia, Château Élan developed special protective measures, by keeping the vines high off the ground and further apart allowing for better ventilation.
